5 reasons why sales is a great career path

Feb 8, 2022

If you’re thinking of taking your first steps into the world of sales, there’s never been a better time.

Just finished school or university? Or maybe you’re stuck in a job you don’t like? If you’re thinking about your next career move, could sales be the path for you?

Forget what you think you know about the world of sales. In this article, we’ll show you five reasons why stepping into sales could be the best career move you ever make.

1 – Financial rewards

Let’s cut to the chase here. If you succeed in sales, you will be extremely well paid for it.

The great thing about the way you get paid in sales is that you have a basic salary, and then you earn a commission based on how much you sell. That means the smarter you work and the more sales you make, the more money you get. You are essentially in control of how much money you take home every month.

As you climb the ladder in sales (more about that later), the money you earn increases dramatically. It’s no surprise that in many big organisations, the top salespeople are the top money earners in the entire company.

Unlike many professions, it’s okay to talk about money when you’re in sales. For many salespeople, earning a good wage is a prime motivating factor. So, embrace it and make your financial dreams come true.

2 –  You get to develop a craft that helps people

One of the many myths about sales is that you are born with sales ability – and if you don’t have those natural skills, you’ll never make it as a salesperson.

This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Sales isn’t all about being a smooth talker or even memorising every detail about the products you sell. Instead, being successful in sales is about being curious, showing empathy and being creative. It’s about working with your customer to find a situation where you both win. You don’t sell a product;  you sell a solution.

At the SaaSLeads Academy, we take people from all different backgrounds and turn them into successful SDRs (sales development reps). Some have always wanted to be in sales, while others had never even considered it before. It doesn’t matter. We give everyone the skills they need to build a long and fruitful sales career.

3 – Sales = freedom

A career in sales provides the autonomy to structure your day how you see fit and be the driving force behind your role. It gives you a sense of freedom that you won’t find anywhere else. Most companies let you work flexibly (especially since the pandemic). You’ll also be free to experiment with different approaches as you try to improve your results. Sales isn’t about the 9 to 5; it’s about hitting your targets and reaping the rewards.

If you can sell, your skills will always be in demand somewhere. Sales is the lifeblood of every business – and even if the way we sell changes, the principles behind selling do not.

At SaaSLeads, we equip our SDRs with the right skills and get them started in tech sales. However, when it’s time for their next move, they might want to sell advertising, food, financial services or anything else. If you’ve got the skills, you can choose your path.

At one of our guest speaker sessions, Bethan Hope-Bell from Meltwater told us that the interpersonal skills you gain as an SDR can take you countless places. Many of her previous colleagues have taken the skills they learned as SDRs into completely different careers, including medicine. What’s more, the skills that you learn as an SDR aren’t only applicable at work. They help in all aspects of your life and set you up for life.

4 – Sales is a fast-track to leadership

Harry Hudson from SalesLoft explained in one of our guest speaker sessions.

‘The sales career you can have in two years would take a lot longer in another field to achieve. There are many opportunities in sales, and you can reap the benefits in a short amount of time.’

If you want to move into management, the sales team is a great place to start. If you can display leadership qualities like initiative and empathy from the start of your sales career, you’ll show yourself as a potential leader. As you progress, you’ll build resilience and adaptability; all great leadership attributes. Then, when it’s time, you’ll be able to make that first step into leadership.

After that, the sky is the limit. For example, did you know that 85% of today’s CEOs and senior executives have a background in sales?

5 –Sales is rewarding and you get to work with some of the most exciting technologies

While sales is undoubtedly hard work, it’s also fun and rewarding in ways that other jobs just aren’t. Trust me; that feeling you get when you win a big deal against the odds is like nothing else!

When you’re in sales, you can easily see how you make a difference. You help your customers solve the problems that keep them up at night, while doing that brings in the money that keeps your company in business. That’s pretty rewarding.

Sales is great fun as well. When you start as an SDR, you’ll likely be in a team of other SDRs just like you. You’ll soon build up a camaraderie as you learn together, celebrating the good times and supporting each other through the bad. The friendships you make in sales can last a lifetime.

At SaaSLeads we’re partnered with some of the best tech companies, where you can learn the skills you need to have a successful career in sales while working at some of the largest tech companies.

Now you know why sales is such a great career move; what are you waiting for?
