5 ways to reach your 2022 goals

Jan 5, 2022

Make 2022 the year you get everything you want. It just takes a bit of preparation.

2021 was another year of upheaval. Maybe you found it difficult to achieve everything you wanted to while dealing with lockdowns, remote working and other repercussions from COVID-19. But, while the Coronavirus hasn’t gone away, it’s becoming something we’re all learning to live with, meaning you can make 2022 a fresh start.

It can be tricky to get back to work after the Christmas holiday and many of us get the ‘New Year Blues’. However, with a bit of preparation, you can hit the ground running, get ahead of your peers and get where you want to go. In this article, we’ll look at five ways to do it. Let’s go!

1 – Set SMART goals

We’re not talking about New Year’s resolutions here. We’re talking about goals – big, audacious goals. When you set goals in the right way, you’re more likely to work towards them in the right way – and more likely to achieve them. The key is to set SMART goals. That means your goals are:

  • Specific – Make your goal clear and easy to understand
  • Measurable – Quantifiable, so you know when you have achieved it
  • Achievable – Your goal has to be realistic, or you’ll soon lose motivation to hit it
  • Relevant – Your goal should be something that is important to your life right now
  • Timely – There needs to be a deadline to achieve your goal, or you’ll keep putting off taking action

Think about SMART goals you would like to hit in 2022. It could be something in your personal life like running a half-marathon, or something work-related like achieving a leadership position. Whatever it is, make a decision and write it down where you can see it. Tell your friends if you want extra accountability.

Then, break down your big goal into smaller chunks, so you can see the steps you need to take to hit your overarching target. Hitting smaller goals on your journey keeps you motivated.

2 – Prepare for day one

You can stand out from the crowd by being ready for action on the first day of the year while everyone else takes their time to settle in. You just need to get your preparation right.

Make sure that before you start on day one, you have a to-do list detailing all the tasks you need to complete that day. If you need any materials or research to help you, make sure you have it to hand before you begin.

It’s also a good idea to create the perfect, fresh workspace for day one. Declutter your work area, removing everything from last year that you won’t need anymore. Then, when it’s time for action, you’ll be primed and ready.

3 – Keep it sustainable

Too often, we attack the new year with such a vengeance, but we can’t sustain that level of action and our motivation drops. This year, make sure you keep it manageable:

  • Take time for breaks during your working day to clear your mind and stay productive
  • Eat well and drink lots of water while you’re working
  • Try to work smarter rather than harder – for example, batch schedule your tasks
  • Start your day with the job you least want to do – it’s better when you save the fun stuff for later as a reward
  • When you’re not working, don’t work! This is especially important if you work from home. Log off, forget about your work and relax. Then, do it all again with maximum motivation tomorrow

4 – Look for feedback

You can’t achieve your goals alone. Make 2022 the year you embrace constructive feedback wherever you find it. Then, act on it and watch your results improve.

Feedback is everywhere, especially if you work in sales. You can find feedback in every call you make to a prospect or customer. Analyse how you conduct every call and look for ways to improve. Make every call a learning opportunity.

You should also ask for feedback from your managers and your team, even if it means swallowing your pride. It’s likely they’ll appreciate being asked – and you can apply their feedback to achieving your 2022 goals.

5 – Adapt when necessary

The plans you make for 2022 aren’t set in stone. Things change – and when they do, you should change with them. Over the course of a year, you may realise that what you thought you wanted, you don’t want at all. Or, a new opportunity may present itself that you had previously never considered.

Don’t get too attached to your New Year’s goals. Instead, revisit them regularly and be prepared to alter them if you think you need to. Flexibility is the key. As you go about achieving your goals, remember to celebrate your wins (however small) and learn from your mistakes.

When you prepare for the New Year the right way, you’ll find that it’s much easier to stay motivated – and you’ll achieve your targets. Good luck!
