Dalena Chau is a new graduate from the SaaSLeads Academy. She’s now starting her SaaS sales career as a BDR at AssessFirst. We sat down with Dalena to talk about her experiences at the Academy.
Discovering the Academy
Hi Dalena. Let’s start at the beginning. What were you doing before joining the SaaSLeads Academy? How did you get started there?
I was working at Dreams, selling beds. It was very repetitive, but it gave me a taste for sales.
I found out about SaaS from my cousin. She’s doing marketing, and her partner is an SDR Manager. I did a lot of research and spent over a month applying for jobs, but nowhere would accept me as I didn’t have the experience or a degree, which I thought was just crazy.
I came across SaaSLeads on LinkedIn. I was sceptical at first because I don’t like to study, but I decided I’d give it a shot.
My first interview was with Polina. It didn’t feel like an interview at all, more like a friendly chat. The interviews for my actual company were nerve-wracking, but it was nice to speak to so many different people.
What was it like for you at the Academy?
Honestly, it was a lot, but what I got most out of it was building new relationships. You know, I have new friends now.
Sonia was the most amazing coach. She built my confidence and showed me how to connect with people in different ways.
What skills do you think you picked up at the Academy?
Confidence, for sure, but also strategy. You have to plan what you’re going to do and how you’re going to get there. Then, you have to follow that plan.
Learning the systems was interesting. I took a day of literally just playing around to get to grips with all of it – and bombarded Sonia with questions. Slack was very new to me, but pretty cool. Cognism and Lead IQ made me wonder how many people have looked me up and found my number!
Now you’ve graduated and placed full-time with a tech company, how’s that going? What are your hopes for the future?
I love everything about being a SDR. I love it all – the people, the role, the product. I couldn’t have been matched with a better company, to be honest.
Every day there is so much to learn. I’m always picking up new things. I was nervous about cold calling when I started, but practice builds your confidence. Now I can call anyone up and just go with the flow.
I have my mind set on a career in sales. I’d like to progress. Maybe I’ll retire here!
