Graduate Case Study – Meena Kandasamy – SDR at Springpod
‘The SaaSLeads Academy is a great place to grow – with confidence’
Meena Kandasamy is a recent graduate from the SaaSLeads Academy. Meena is now beginning her SaaS sales career as an SDR at Springpod, where she has already booked 12 meetings. We caught up with Meena to talk about her experiences at the Academy.
Discovering the Academy
Hi Meena. Let’s start at the beginning. How did you find out about the SaaSLeads Academy?
I graduated in 2020 but was searching for a job for ages. I saw an ad on Gradfuel for the SaaSLeads Academy, applied and then forgot about it. Then, I got an email saying I’d been chosen for an interview. That was great.
I wasn’t sure whether sales was for me. I’m a talkative person, but I was aware of the stigma around sales. Brian (Meta, Head of Sales) reassured me, showing me how sales has evolved.
How would you describe the Academy to someone thinking about signing up?
It’s such a supportive, nurturing process. I’m so grateful for that. They really care about you and how you feel. They take you through everything step by step, breaking everything down. You grow with confidence.
I’d advise anyone joining the Academy to be as open as you can with everyone. Talk to everyone. Don’t hold back. Ask questions.
What was the main skill you developed at the Academy?
I’d say being a better listener. I thought sales was all about you talking, but actually, you need to listen to the client and identify their needs. Shut up, basically!
What about skills outside of sales? Did the Academy help in your personal development?
I learned resilience. Even if life knocks you down, you have to keep going. The effort you put in now will pay off later, like a harvest.
What was your favourite part of the Academy?
The guest speakers were great, especially Jack Oly. He’s a double Olympic athlete, and he spoke to us about mental health and how you need to put your mental health first above everything else. It was inspirational.
Tell me about a time you had to step out of your comfort zone.
Cold calling for the first time was quite scary. I like to chat, but knowing you have to actually listen and ask the right questions – it was good to get that over with!
You must have some funny stories?
Oh gosh. I was in the Springpod office in London in the middle of a meeting, and the CEO came in. I got up, walked over to him and hugged him! No idea why. My brain wasn’t working. It was so embarrassing!
Finally, can you sum up your SaaSLeads Academy experience in three words?
Enjoyable nurturing process.
