Work like a professional footballer

At first glance, it might not seem like there are many similarities between the life of a professional footballer and a tech sales professional. However, when you look a bit closer, they have a lot in common. There are a lot of lessons you can take from footballers that may help you boost your performance.


Using muscle memory to your advantage

Why do footballers, who we already know are outstanding at football, go to training every day? It’s because they know that the more you do something, whether it’s passing, tackling or shooting, the better you get at it, and the more likely you are to succeed when it matters.

The same is true in sales. But, how long do you spend practising your call opens or discovery calls? You can build muscle memory by practising something for 3 hours a day or 20 hours a week


Maximise your wins

Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp don’t teach their players how to pass a ball better or strike it into the top corner. Rather, they give their players tactics to succeed and, most importantly, get more out of their players than even the players themselves thought possible.

In sales, companies that run sales coaching programmes record 28% higher win rates than those that don’t. The more time you spend with your coach analysing your performance and where you can improve, the more likely you are to achieve your goals.


Confidence is key

Just like sales professionals, footballers have good games and bad games. 

When a footballer is in a slump, you can often see it destroy their confidence, so they’ll pass when they should shoot, or they won’t volunteer to take that vital penalty. The best players maintain their belief even when things aren’t going their way, knowing that their fortunes will turn around as long as they keep working.

When you’re going through a bad patch, you must keep your activity levels high and work that confidence back. For example, as an SDR it takes an average of 8 attempts to book a meeting with a prospect. Don’t give up too early.
